SolidWorks 3D CAD Technology Design BlogWould You Use It? The First High-Quality 3D Printer… On Your Desktop

Imagine for a moment - taking a sip of coffee, scalding your mouth, then slamming your fist upon the keyboard that sends your final SolidWorks generated 3D model to a 3D printer sitting right next to you.

Design is getting closer and closer to software development. You write a program, push a button, and get all the copies you want. Drop another zero or two from those prices and we would be there for mechanical designs too.

Only disappointment with it is that it won't work with the Tango materials (Rubber like materials).
Still looks like a heck of a deal!
Thanks for sharing!

While the differences are great in that the alaris 30 is 3D Printer and the V-Flash an SLA 3D Printer, still the cost is marked.
Who would spend $ 40k for something that can be done with a $ 10k machine?
Very different is the Dimension series which print directly abs materials....now that is worth it...since the cost of abs is much less.

The dimension Elite is a good price at 32k, but if you have a small shop/office this one may be worth the extra. I'd take a good look at both though before deciding. The ABS is definitely a great selling point.

I know there are always going to be firms with the dough to throw into this unit.
But, personally when I get to the point that I can spend $ 40K on a 3D printer it will be for a Dimension Elite.
The Objet Connex 500.........Now that's a different story that machine is litterally " Beautiful ", it can create composite models in res as well as small foot print.
But hey when your up your up so why not buy the Alaris 30 if your in the loop....I.E. ' oil baron/ness ' related.

first: ABS like for injection molding etc. is cheap but the specially prepared ABS for SLA and Printers are expensive - you really need to do an comparison on Density and Volume und get out of a cartrigde - the weight price is totally useless! And on this basis the Objects printers do pretty well compared to the other printers - although powder printers (or laser sintering) like the ones form Z-Corp are still unbeatable in that sector. Also you have to consider that printed/SLA ABS has by far not the same properties and qualities as "industrial" ABS.
second: what do u need you printer / SLA for ? for parts bigger say like 10-20cm SLA might be suffiently accurate BUT if you print out components that need to work instantly or u have small objects like MP3-Players etc or even smaller like machine components that are only like 1 cm big and have feature only a few micrometers thick then you can forget SLA altogether because their resoultion totally sucks. Small casings like for MP3-Player or mobile phone could be finished but not real small machine parts etc. If you also consider the machine, tools, supplies and worktime you need to finish SLA parts the you run costs way lower even in the middle run - and you are faster and thus flexible!
Another feature which is hardly or impossible to manage are micorstructures like this (http://3s.addfabb.com/index.php?lang=1), which will gain a lot of importance in the future!

I think not~!!! You say that sla is not accurate in small part design especially for small machine parts?
Have you ever had a small part made from an SLA machine? Because I have...I.E. gears racks...which are some of the most res tolerant important apps as they must maintain the original cad models integrity right to the angles specified.
Surely there are other uses where the sla part may not match the cad file.
Yes there is a difference between industrial abs and the pre-loaded abs cartridge material. But, you mentioned powder based 3D printers....lol.
Powder based 3D printers also have costly pre-made material costs. But, there are " OEM " remixes for powder based 3D printers that quite frankly are not difficult to formulate.
The same applies with the Dimension abs 3D printers. Thus again I say that the cost of using an abs 3d printer is very much under that of any powder or sla 3D printer.
To make a point just because your car was designed to run on gasoline, does not mean you have to run it on leaded, unleaded....lol.
An engine will run on water I.E. hho or straight hydrogen as well as bio fuels cooking oils and various other properties; as for the maintenance and longevity for using non-recommended formulations depends upon your mixture solution.
This same idea can be employed with any 3D printer but the cost of abs compared to that of the materials of sla & powder based machines is great.
On the z-corp 3D printers....I simply don't like the way that this company does business on the management/corporate level. Not to say the distributors but the wild price flucuations from one state to another.
And, zcorps unwillingness to allow potential buyers to purchase machines from other states than where the machine will reside. The responsibility of maintence for a machine is upon the owner not zcorp or it'slocal distributor who wishes to charge $ 15K or $30K more than a distributor for the same package in another state or area outside the local distributors area.
The unwillingness to co operate from zcorp to me says everything about the company & their products.
Fortunately, there are many other manufactures to obtain 3D printers from and the list continues to grow each year.

This thing is amazing, but what's the highest res printer on the market right now?
I've had samples sent to me from various vendors, and only one has come even close to "quality".
I mean, people need to get over the "coolness" factor of being able to print something in 3D and start demanding quality.
Not sure what Thunder meant by it's overpriced regardless of resolution. Resolution is the MAIN factor. Now if this unit is overpriced simply because it's small, then ok. But from what I've seen, you can't get high quailty anywhere yet. I'm surprised by the resolution of this one. It looks like the surface is nearly smooth. This is so much better than the full color "sugar sculptures" coming from Z-corp.
