SolidSmack: 40+ SolidWorks and 3D CAD Users to Follow on Twitter

  • VectorJess · 1 year ago
I feel oddly elated to hold the 99th spot on this list of 99 names. Thanks for including @vectorworks. Hey, @LeslieGordon is the editor at Machine Design. She might be the magical 100th tweep to add to the list. http://twitter.com/LeslieGordon
  • Josh M · 1 year ago
Hey Jess, no problem! I've added Leslie too, and she's IS the 100th person on the list!
  • philipstears · 1 year ago
Hi Josh - just thought I'd let you know, Maria's our VP Marketing and Co-founder, I doubt she'll mind, but "bloggin' and such" barely covers a fraction of a percent of what she actually does :-)
  • philipstears · 1 year ago
(Many thanks for the add btw :-))
  • Josh M · 1 year ago
doh! (sorry Maria) I updated to display her proper credential. thanks!
  • philipstears · 1 year ago
Great stuff, cheers - now all we need is a twitter announcement everytime your list gets updated ;-)
  • Bradley Grzesiak · 1 year ago
I'm on twitter, too. Every once in awhile you'll see a post of mine berating a crash of SolidWorks or praising a newly discovered feature. Find me @listrophy.
  • Josh M · 1 year ago
    A quick Twitter how-to:

    1. Sign up at Twitter.com
    2. Go to My profile
    3. Select Follow
    4. Send me a message by typing - @solidsmack hi! I'm on twitter.
    5. Follow the people above, find other or look at who I follow!

I like to use the Twhirl Twitter Client on my computer. Makes it easier to manage when I'm on and off.

    Hope this helps!

    Josh,
Would Twitter be a good application to use to communicate with my coworkers in the office? Back in the days when we used Windows 95, we used Winpopup to send messages to ask questions of someone who was 4 or 5 cubes away. Saved a lot of walking and being ambushed on the way to theire desk answer questions from other people and allowed you to concentrate on the task at hand.
  • Charles Culp · 1 year ago
    Rod,

A better choice would be AIM: AOL Instant Messenger, or YahooIM or one of the other instant messenger tools. Those are better for 1 on 1 communication. Twitter is much more suited to group communications. AIM is like talking on the phone, twitter is like shouting across a crowded room. So, you know, if the person is 4 cubes away, just shout!
  • Rod_Uding · 1 year ago
Thanks for the input Charles! I will look into the messengers to see what we can use here in Engineering for better communications on the fly.
  • Josh M · 1 year ago
I'd agree that an IM like yahoo or AIM may server your purpose better, although I have seen Twitter being used by companies like Zappos for communication. I use meebo.com online. It incorporates all the other services (AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, MSN) so you don't have to be stuck with just one. Alot like Jabber or Trillian, but you don't have to install anything.
  • Rod_Uding · 1 year ago
Sooooo, seems it boils down to something internal with an installation or something external without an installation. Pro/Con weighing time!
  • Charles Culp · 1 year ago
After thinking about it, I would look into Skype. It has the added benefit of very easy to use voice chat. Most of the others do too, but Skype is what I use to chat long distance. I hardly ever use my cell phone.
  • Rod_Uding · 1 year ago
What is required to be able to use Skype?
  • Rod_Uding · 1 year ago
I did a Google on Twitter and checked out the Wikipedia entry on Twitter
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter

I did see that several corporations are using it. Even the Los Angeles Fire
    Department is using it.

Followup: $%#$%@%^$%&, tried to go to Twitter from my workstaiton and got blocked by Websense. Seems that they do not approve of Social or Networking websites. Oddly enough though, I can get to Linkedin where I have a profile.

Seeing how you SW Twitter user list is growing, I will have to move to the
dark side and join up on Twitter since you are all using peer pressure.
  • Charles Culp · 1 year ago
You're still not on twitter? Create an account at home, then create an iGoogle account (http://www.google.com/ig). Then add the "BeTwittered" application (http://www.google.com/ig/directory?q=32hours.co...).
  • Rod_Uding · 1 year ago
Thanks for the information Charles! I keep my Firefox browser up all day with my iGoogle account and other goodies. This will work out nicely. i will do this on Saturday when I roll in to the office in the morning before I start working.

    Update: 2008.11.16
Ok, was extra busy on Saturday and did not get around to the setup. Did it today and started following. Looking forward to shouting to everyone.
  • MatthewWest · 1 year ago
Windows actually has a built-in IM client (windows messenger). Maybe you can talk to your IT team about getting it activated. In a corporate environment, it's a lot easier to use than AIM or Google Talk because you can look up coworkers using their email address, and everyone has an account once it's enabled.
  • Rod_Uding · 1 year ago
That is another option I was looking at since we are still on XP. However, Microsoft once again in their inifinite wisdom killed it off in Vista. Seeing how long it takes us around here to upgrade operating systems we would probably be safe in using it for a several more years before we get moved to Vista. Thank you for the suggestion Matthew!
  • Ricky Jordan · 1 year ago
    Rod,

At our company we use Microsoft Communicator (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/communicator/...) to communicate internally with other employees on our network. Our IT loves it because it is "secure" in that you have to be on the company network to run it. The downside to it (I think) is that you cannot communicate with those outside the company firewall. I haven't used it in a while but I have many co-workers who use it daily.

    Best Regards,

    Ricky Jordan
  • Rod_Uding · 1 year ago
Thanks for offering another option for communication Ricky! This is
something I have not heard of before. Time to click the link and go explore
    this option.

2008.08.05: I spoke this morning with our Director of Applications, he said they are working on selecting a IM system and Mircrosoft Communicator is at the top. No timeline on it yet though.

So, hopefully we will have a IM system in place by the end of the year.

  • burhop · 1 year ago
Nice post, Josh. I'm sure it was a lot of work to create this list (especially the descriptions) but the CAD community appreciates it!
  • Josh M · 1 year ago
No problem man! It was fun to put together. Hopefully we'll see it grow. :)
  • Dave · 1 year ago
    Love lists!

  • Bradley Grzesiak · 1 year ago
A better solution would be Jabber. Jabber is an open protocol with many open source implementations. Ideally, you would have your IT admin install a "Jabber server" (eg: openfire) on a company server. You would then install a "Jabber client" (eg: Psi) on each machine. Your IT admin can then set it up so that confidentiality is ensured: no one out on the Internet can join your server and no one in your company can "chat" with external entities. Of course, if your company policies allow it, these restrictions can be completely relaxed.

(this was meant to be a reply to Rod_Uding, but somehow it got bumped out of the thread)
  • Rod_Uding · 1 year ago
Interesting, I have not heard of Jabber before or it has simply been below the radar for me. I do like the idea of it being local only. I will have to take a look at it along with the messaging options.

To bad Twitter won't get of the ground in the Netherlands it is widely known but almost nobody is using it. One big dutch site said it is like Second life and just a hype, but I disagree. I will keep spamming twitter in the Netherlands until there servers blow up!
  • Brandon Leedy · 1 year ago
Hi Josh! I'm @brandonleedy on twitter and I'm a Solidworks user! I've been following you for a while but haven't tweeted up anything Solidworks wise. I'm a student (junior year) at D.A.A.P. studying Industrial Design and learning Solidworks in combination with AliasStudio to make rapid prototypes and renders! Currently I'm on SW '07. But hopefully soon to be '08 ($ issues ...ahh college).

Love the blog, see you around!
  • Lynn Cherny · 1 year ago
I'm @arnicas, a SolidWorks usability and research consultant - but I tweet about rather random things. I'm also running the www.CreatetheFutureContest.com website for SolidWorks for the second year now. We really want Solidworks entries, they always look so good!
  • MatthewWest · 1 year ago
Come on Josh, I thought this was our secret club or something...

Actually, the more the merrier. Good to see all the new follower, both to my personal account and @SolidWorks, which I also manage (for anyone who didn't already know).

Has anyone evaluated yammer and come up with a differance of yammer over twitter? I think these tools are good for staying in touch in general sense, but I don't see how these will work for a real design team. The reason is posted http://vuuch.com/wordpress/?p=176 here. The main problem is these tools lack context, menaing they are disconnected just like an email from the what. Example: if I am working in a CAD file and want to ask about the hole diameter then the discussion should know that it is about the hole diameter and then anyone later can see that a disucssion was used to define this diameter... this is what we are doing at vuuch.com.
  • Josh M · 1 year ago
awesome Chris, I agree. The context is missing. I use Yammer at work also and I still get up, go over to another persons desk, because the discussion needs to be in the same environment. email, im, micro- blogging, besides being very linear, are disconnected - branches that fall right off the tree of 'the perfect design'.

I'm looking forward to trying out the SolidWorks portion of Vuuch. All the best.

    Surprise ! Surprise

No one from India in this list ? What has happened to Indian Solid works community
  • Josh M · 10 months ago
Hey Sherpaa! Well, let me know if there are. I know the SW community in India is very large. I imagine a few of them must be on Twitter.
