At the rate hardware is advancing, the possibilities almost seem endless. I envision a world where designers can manipulate parts assemblies in a 3D 'virtual reality' environment; think holideck from StarTrek. An environment like this would allow for huge advancements in fit and function scenarios that current rapid prototyping methods cannot handle, as well as a whole new level of FEA analysis capabilities. The most challenging of today's design problems may one day be able to be 100% prototyped in a virtual environment with real life physical dynamics. It sounds sci-fi, but think of how many of the technologies we already have today would have sounded 10 or 20 years ago. I believe the future will only continue to amaze us.

Re: 3D SpaceNavigator Contest Update: More to Win!

Future CAD will be a combination of the virtual environment and the tactile possibilities of 3D printing. No more plans on paper, no more compatibility problems, no more heavy workstations!
We'll all go to mobility, instant creating and visualizing, complex machine items which can be printed and no longer have to be machined! Todays coating technologies will be optimised to use a plastic carrier and to apply the needed coatings to give the strength.
Looks amazing, the future!

Re: 3D SpaceNavigator Contest Update: More to Win!

I think that rather than wishing myself out of a job by beaing able to think about the part I want and have it drawn for me, I would like to see the future of CAD be all about solid modeling, and have the ol' 3 view made for me 100% automatically, that way I could get my modeling done, and skip straight to the golf part of my day!

Re: 3D SpaceNavigator Contest Update: More to Win!

CAD in the future will be easy to learn and use.
Complex designs can be output with relative ease.

Re: 3D SpaceNavigator Contest Update: More to Win!

The future of CAD will be crazy. We won't even have a keyboard, mouse, or any other input devices. We'll just think what we want to do and control it with our brains! Although until then, I'd love to have a 3D mouse. I'm a TA for the ENGR Design class at Oregon State U and it would be great to show the students what this device can do. Also, I'm a typical broke college student...help?
